Man's hand picking up manna?

The Book of Exodus is my favorite writing out of the 66 canonical books of scripture. It is rich containing history, drama, and even a small amount of comedy (if you read between the lines). This book tells the story of the Hebrew people and their God-empowered exit from the hands of tyranny.

As if escaping a dictator wasn’t enough, the nation of Israel complained that they were, at first, thirsty (God provided water), and then they complained they were hungry and He provided manna. Manna was a substance that gave God’s people just enough nourishment to survive day by day. There was an issue with this food, though (at least one we perceive as an issue). God wanted the Israelite people to only collect enough manna for the day, and none for the future (except before a sabbath). This meant, as Dr. Kevin Stirratt points out in his book Manna, “[The Israelite people] had to go to bed each night with their cupboards empty”. They had to rely on God for each step.

I feel as if I am living this reality right now. I am in a season (and I think we all have a season like this) in which God has shown me a fantastic future, but has only given the resources for right now. God, though, just keeps providing. I don’t deserve it, but He is so faithful. This is both an exciting and disorienting place to be.

It is natural for us to want God to “allow us to fill our storehouses” so that we can be sure that we will have enough. That’s just not the way it works. He wants us to rely on Him. If we have to go back to Him daily for supply, then we have to GO BACK TO HIM DAILY. God is a little sneaky like that. He sets up systems that requires us to check in with Him regularly…and that is okay.

I am happy to oblige. Coming to the throne regularly is worth it.
